Titanic is a 1997 drama/romance about the ill-fated ship that sank in early 1912. Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) is looking for an expensive necklace, the Heart of the Ocean, supposedly at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, but instead of finding the necklace inside the safe, he finds a sketch of a nude woman (young Rose) wearing the necklace. Rose DeWitt Bukater (Gloria Stuart) sees the picture on TV and calls Lovett, claiming to be the woman in the picture. One of Lovett's teammates, Lewis Bodine (Lewis Abernathy) is skeptical saying she's crazy, but when Rose flies out there to prove to them it's her, she eventually convinces them. She also finds one of her mother Ruth's old things. Lovett, Bodine, Lizzy Calvert (her granddaughter played by Suzy Amis) and Anatoly Mikailavich (Anatoly M. Sagalevitch) ask her to tell them the story. The movie travels back to April 1912 when the Titanic sets sail. Rose (Kate Winslet), who is only 17 years old, is engaged to Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane). At dinner, Rose feels like she's trapped and she leaves the dining room and goes to the back of the ship. She steps over the rails and looks down at the cold water, planning to jump to her death. Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) is laying on a bench looking up at the stars and smoking a cigarette when Rose runs past him. Jack approaches her and tells her about how cold the water is. "It hits you like a thousand knives stabbing you all over your body. You can't breathe. You can't think. At least, not about anything but the pain." So, Rose is finally convinced to come back over, but she slips and she's hanging over the back of the ship. Jack tries to lift her up and they fall back onto the ship. Jack is about to be arrested for "molesting" her when Rose lies for him. The next day, Jack shows her his sketches of other women, then teaches her how to "spit like a man". Jack is invited to dinner with Rose, and Molly Brown (Kathy Bates) fixes him up to be a fancy gentleman. Later in the movie, Rose asks Jack to draw her like one of his French girls wearing the Heart of the Ocean that Cal gave her. After the sketch, Jack signs it and puts it in the safe with the necklace. Unfortunately, later, when the ship is sinking, Cal sneaks the necklace into Jack's coat pocket and he is accused of stealing it. Jack tries to tell Rose the truth, but Rose can't bring herself to believe him. Jack is handcuffed and locked in a room. Rose finally tells herself that Jack wasn't lying and goes to look for him. She finds him in the room and breaks the handcuffs with an axe. As the panic starts to rise among the passengers of the Titanic, Rose leaves Cal and Jack gets her into a lifeboat. But as the lifeboat goes down, Rose climbs back onto the ship and Jack calls her stupid for getting back on. When the ship finally sinks, Jack and Rose swim around frantically looking for something to hold on to until a rescue boat comes. The broken door they find can only fit one person, so Jack lets Rose rest on the door. Jack tells Rose to never let go before he dies of hypothermia. Finally, Rose is rescued and lives on. Back in 1996, old Rose walks to the back of the boat that Lovett and the others are on and it turns out she had the necklace the whole time. She holds the necklace out and has a flashback to 1912 when she finds the necklace in Cal's coat. She throws it over into the ocean and the movie ends with a dream sequence with Jack at the top of a staircase on the Titanic. He holds his hand out to her and they kiss.
